Getting Educated Now To Empower (GENTE)

G.E.N.T.E. (Getting Educated Now to Empower) is a bilingual one day informative Latin@/Chican@ parent and student conference that is planned to happen on March 8th, 2015.

This conference is put on by members of the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) chapter at the University of California Santa Cruz. M.E.Ch.A. that meets every Tuesday at 8pm (Check out MEChA Facebook page HERE for the location since it is still in the works!). Engaging Education (e2) is a student led student initiated student of color center that organizes around issues of retention and outreach of under resourced and underrepresented communities of color. GENTE gratefully thanks Engaging Education for providing the funding and support that makes this conference possible.

The purpose of GENTE is to provide workshops, performances, and information while simultaneously promoting parent involvement which ultimately transforms into support for their child’s path to college. The conference is completely free and is meant to empower over 150 high school students and their family members. The conference serves as a space to discuss the opportunities in pursuing higher education, and inform them on the processes to prepare for University.
